Eugene I think both plugins from SEAO and Hire-Experts actually replace the standard feed with their own improved feed versions. Please keep that in mind when evaluating both options.

Bugs, Bugs, Bugs in my Cloud...

I'm just trying to setup a basic little community on the cloud.  I just want to invite people, or perhaps upload a file, and the buttons just sit there not doing anything.  Tried every browser in existence.  Is this normal everyone?

      Donna Hello,

Thank you for posting and sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing. Would you please send us a ticket from your client account so we can help troubleshoot with you? It could be something added to your site causing a javascript issue; a browser setting (Firefox and Chrome are very picky lately); or some configuration issue.

A tip, if you want to see what's happening on your site or on any site, you can right click and choose "Inspect" or "Inspect Element" to see the processes happening. There will be a Console tab and Network tab. Click those to see any errors or issues happening. Sometimes, it can help point you to the exact problem.

How are you preparing for the 4.9 release?
As our 4.9 is just around the corner, I thought I would open this thread to see how you all are preparing for release. This thread is also mentioned in our blog that should come out today. :)

Do you have your upgrade plans all set up?

How are you handling customizations, plugins, etc?

I'll post a link to the blog in the community once it's out as well. It's a pre-release post with some info on anticipated release dates.
      • 1
Sieg I confess that I was expecting something like a demo or a release date in the yesterday blog :|
      • 1
beanorama Confused. I've received several emailed offers to pay now for the 4.9 upgrade. I've got a license already and I don't recall paying for upgrades.

gs With great anticipation, excitement, and hope :)

My situation is very different from most because I'm still in development mode (yes, after over 1.5 years - mainly due to countless bugs with 1 particular Dev's Plugins). But I was planning on moving to production 2017-QTR1, but held off due to the imminent release of 4.9 which I need primarily for the (hoped) page-load-speed reduction using PHP 7/7.1 and Zend security updates. Although I have many SE Modules, I only use Core (obviously) and Photo Albums (every other feature/functionality is replaced with 3rd-Party Plugins/Theme). Thus re: 4.9, I have little concern with SE, but great concern with 3rd-Party Devs. In fact, the only thing I care about with 4.9 (besides hopefully no negative impact to my site) is PHP 7/7.1 compatibility and the Zend security updates. I don't even care about the new Theme as I won't be replacing SpectroMedia. So, all of the new features and functionality are of no use to me. But, this has been my plan from day 1 with SE - I only need SE because the 3rd-Party Plugins I require are built on SE.

      - Plugins/Theme: Contacted 3rd-Party Devs for all Plugins I have to find out their estimated time-to-update their Plugins after 4.9 is released (especially since they've probably already had a version of 4.9 for them to work/test on to get a head-start with their Plugin/Theme updates)
      - Customizations: For the most part, I have asked Devs over the past year to be sure customizations are compatible with PHP 7/7.1, but obviously they couldn't guarantee SE 4.9 compatibility until they had 4.9, but there's not much that should be impacted by 4.9 (since all customizations are to 3rd-Party Pluigns, not SE directly) so for the most part I should (hopefully) be in good shape with customizations
      - Since my current server OS doesn't support multiple versions of PHP, last December I tested an updated server OS with xVarnish but ran into serious performance issues with Logging In and also 1 Plugin (2-4 min page loads). So, that option is out. I plan on setting up a separate server with PHP 7/7.1 and porting the existing site to that for the 4.9 updates and all testing (along with 3rd-Party Plugins). This way that is independent of my current Dev site/server. Depending on how things go and when, either the Dev server OS and SE site will be updated (SE 4.9 and all 3rd-Party Plugins), or the upgraded SE w/Plugins (on the 2nd server) will be ported back to the server1 (after server OS and PHP updates) and continue from there.

There are many sub-steps involved, but that's the general idea. Again, please keep in mind that since I'm still not into Production that I have much more flexibility and less urgent potential issues than most SE ADMINs.

      PoeticJustice Further update

      Here is a video http://sendvid.com/8apytcfd
      or download video here https://we.tl/BZzjHcg0ry

I believe the issue i have detailed out here, was a bug raised back in April 2015 that was closed and not looked into
      https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/24

SE for browse members is NOT searching the profile fields of each user, but creating a new database in engine4_user_fields_search, but based on the hide on browse members page / show on browse members page.

THIS KILLS ALL SEARCH FEATURES IN BROWSE MEMBERS, as from the very start everything needs to be set to show on browse members page. If you so much as accidently hide, or hide from testing purposes, it deletes all records of that field, which then becomes unsearchable when you set back to SHow on browse members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      extract from https://www.socialengine.com/features/php/core

      Browse & Search
SocialEngine allows members to easily navigate your site, discover new content, and find specific posts.
      Browse members
Members (and optionally visitors) can browse through your entire member list. Results can be filtered by profile information, like location, age, gender, height, occupation, etc. You can also choose to show only members that have a photo and members that are currently online.
      • 1
PoeticJustice to sum this bug up or even major flaw up, here goes

After more testing I can confirm this, to replicate do this

Use Gender profile question set to (Hide on browse members)
Sign up and select a Gender - for this example signup as Male
Now log in as Admin and click Edit Gender question (Set to show on browse members)
      Now goto browse members
      Search Male

it will return with NO members found.

      another test could be this

Gender profile question originally set to (show on browse members)
Sign up and select a Gender - for this example signup as Male
Search browse members, goto Gender and select Male
All Male users will show up
      Goto profile questions as admin
set Gender to (Hide on browse members)
      save
then edit it again so Gender is (Show on browse members)
      Save
Goto browse members, select gender, set to Male............... No Males will ever be suggested, every Male who had been signed up, is totally unsearchable, until they edit their profile info and press save.................... or unless users signup after doing this exercise

BUGS - Which i have found and all need to be fixed for 4.9
    Hi all
Im posting all bugs i have found and raised with Social Engine via Github
I want everyone to be aware now, i fear they wont be fixed which is important so i think everyone needs to be aware, even the 3rd party developers because bugs will affect potential custom work.

Mobile Issue with Multi Select Profile Questionshttps://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/536

profile questions - multi select more issues found when searching membershttps://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/580

Yet again another bug - Profile fields section AGAIN -  regards to multilayered questions, which reacts differently on displaying data when search, based on its top level original question, either ignores all 2nd level, 3rd 4th level question/answers, or will display no members.https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/592

now the one below is spamming tools bug

I can live without this being fixed for now sacrafice to make sure all above are fixed, but the above are all bugs within the sames sectors, but various bugs in general, and weird behaviour.
If only one is fixed above, i will be deeply disappointed because its in the same area

    https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/589

I will say again, please let me test 4.9 on a staging server prior to press release and release, these need fixing!!!

      Donna Hello PoeticJustice,

Thanks for posting. We understand your concerns and want to assure you that our Github gets checked by our technicians as part of our routine. When you post several times in the same Github tracker, it causes our technicians delays in getting things fixed. This is because they have to check every report. If you submit a duplicate report, they end up checking the same bug more than once. This takes from production time as they are in testing time. Please be patient and wait for our team to address the issues you posted, without posting duplicated reports. This will help to speed the process.

In regards to our developer beta release. This is a release meant for third party experts to be able to get their products updated prior to a client version release. This doesn't have your bug fixes in it as it is a beta just to help third parties get updated faster. It does have many bugs fixed but the most recent ones will be in the client release that we make. Our team needs time to finish those bugs. If you keep posting comments and tagging them in it, they stop what they are doing to read your updates. This again will take from development time.

We are committed to having a great product and to making our clients happy with great websites. Please allow us time to get this product out into production ready status. :) We assure you that your concerns are noted and that we are committed to addressing our bug tracker as efficiently as possible. Right now, staff is quite tied up addressing this beta release and also, at the same time, continuing to address bugs that remain open. If you don't hear a response in the bug tracker, it is because our team is tied up fixing currently marked bugs and will get back to testing remaining open bugs as soon as possible.

      Thanks again.

    Upcoming release 4.9
    Hello,

I like to know a few things about the upcoming release 4.9, first I like to say I’m excited about this upcoming release and at the same time I’m curious about a few things that I need to share.

In the past I have done allot of customisations by 3rd party developers, customisations that have been for a while now today's standard in almost every social media business. I’m talking about responsiveness, asynchronous loading, Ajax, jQuery events.

    Some of my questions are:

    1. Are you going to change the way menus like settings / edit my profile, popups, search etc..  respond faster with the use of the above mentioned technology? For example the General Account Settings from Facebook, this is very user friendly and no need for page loads, this would be a huge + for user experience.

    2. Are you going to update the design and way of managing the mail box function? Again I’m looking at Facebook style that’s user friendly and not to complex to develop I guess. Also a huge + for user experience.

    3. Are you doing any changes in the Admin by design and technology? Some things are just not located in a logical order, for example I use many plugins and sometimes I like to go to a specific plugin and I keep looking for it. After a new plugin has been installed, the order of plugin changes. My advice is to bundle by developer in alphabetic order or something. So it’s less time consuming having to search for the right plugin every time. Maybe also make a shortcut section where you can add links of plugins you need often. Sometimes I need to click many times to get where I need to be.

    4. Layout editor improvements, having allot of plugins installed makes it time consuming to scroll to the right plugin block, it would be great to have a search function or something like that, at least to improve navigation. Also in my opinion the whole layout is a bit hard to read, bigger fonts and tables would benefit the navigation experience.

    5. A custom functions.php for each theme, I don’t know if anything like this already exists but I have not seen it. This would be very handy for adding custom PHP code and it won’t get overwritten when updated.

    6. Javascript loading, I have learned that adding the javascript at the bottom is better for faster page loading. When I look at the SE source code I see that most of the javascript is loaded in the top. Is there a reason why they are in the top, or is there space for improvements?

    7. Improved Chat plugin, for example with video chat (multiple members at the same time), audio calling etc.

    8. Tiny MCE seems to have bugs now and then and is outdated, will this be updated to the latest version?

    9. And last but not least, when is the actual release date approximately? (tomorrow, next week, next month, a few months from now, or maybe longer) It's good to know if I'm going forward with some customisations or wait till the release of 4.9

There are many other things that I stumbled upon over the years, the above are just some of most importance for me. Please share your thoughts about things mentioned above. I like to know your experiences and what could be improved and how.

      gs @Dandy - many good ideas/questions
Item#03 Although SE will be alphabetizing this in 4.9, 3rd-Party Devs should be required to start their Plugin Names with their company name (or abbrev) so they're grouped.

Item#07 CometChat takes care of this for me (group chat is limited to about 10 Users though due to degradation after that). They also include an audio-only chat function.

      Donna Hello [172,Dandy]!

Thanks for posting and taking time to go over your concerns. A lot of what you are asking is in our blog posts, http://blog.socialengine.com/?s=4.9 but I'll touch on a few of your issues that I can answer.

Note that our theme in 4.9 is responsive and we went over a lot of that in our 4.9 Sneak Peek so you will definitely want to read that blog. The Roadmap went over just about every improvement that's coming so you'll want to check that out.

I'm not sure about your point about the mailbox. I find it very easy to use now. I actually hate FB mail and find it harder to use. Perhaps you can let us know what exact features of it that you like though, noting that they have a huge ton of servers to handle the features they have.

You'll be happy to know that we are adding a feature to alphabetize plugins. That should help immensely with finding plugins after you install them.

For item 5, it sounds like a Wordpress feature that you would like. I don't do themes but that does sound like a handy feature. It's not something I see in our 4.9 beta that I'm checking now.

I believe there are third party developers that can handle making a video chat plugin if there is not one. I've not checked to see if Cometchat has a SocialEngine plugin but they are popular on other scripts and have video chat.

TinyMCE is updated in 4.9 :)

I mentioned yesterday that we will have a blog with a date of 4.9 release. :) I hope we will have the blog out tomorrow but it depends on our beta releasing so we have a date of our public release. I can say that the public release of 4.9 is coming very soon.

For any of your features that you've mentioned, if we don't have them in our roadmap, please check at our Github, https://github.com/socialengine/phpv4-issues/issues . If you don't see the specific things you want, please feel free to submit suggestions for us to consider. Please be sure to put only one suggestion per Github issue as we need to log the ones we accept and can't do that if more than one request is in the issue raised.

I hope these answers have been helpful.

Community of great people and change for better in Social Engine
I truly am a firm believer who wants to help social engine be even greater than it is, its just there is some things that are truly way outdated that need its trousers pulled up and change
the more i use SE daily, because i use it daily, i use it such a unique way also.I just notice things, my fear is that if certain things are not updated, its only a matter of time before a new competitor comes along to rival SE.
Its just like when the movie industry wasn't fully ready to embrace change for motion pictures with sound, as they were stuck in the silent movies age...... then when studios didn't want to embrace Televisions when they came into peoples homes. the radio shows however embraced it and made shows.

Made studios lose millions as people were staying at home to watch tv rather than go cinema,Blockbuster video didn't want to embrace change of sending films via the post or even digital film renting...... what happened Netflix, and now a company who saw an opportunity that big company was not willing to address took over, not only took over but they fund their own productions.
Having worked in Music industry and motion pictures industry, ive witnessed how companies dont want to address certain changes, or listen to the people that use or support their products.

the evolution of Social Engine is with us the users who have paid or paying.
even small changes or additional content to improve can be great to us the
consumer as we feel our input is being taken making us feel like a family.
I have raised some bugs on github and enhancement suggestions. I just feel SE should seriously implement rather than "we will think about it", implement shows us, and gives us hope.

Im going to give a prime example..... Instagram
how has Instagram not been made into a specific profile question, i made a github post here https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/565
On how to make it! It takes like 5-10 mins and would look great to others to have this addition in an update, and its been asked to be implimented ages ago, i know people have asked in tickets, my friend asked way back in like 2013 odd about it
Instagram is massive, bigger than twitter! twitter is just a platform for companies to use as a complaints dept.
Yet AIM is there, pretty sure AIM changed there business model to become a service like whatsapp.
Serious guys ive gave a step by step on how to make the files, yet feel it will never be implemented, and thats very small scale but is a step in direction of change

Here is a github page where i told a user who raised it another time, as once i gave details how to make the files, they confirmed it works like a charm https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/554

Donna Thanks for taking the time to write this feedback. Things will improve here. It takes a little time though. We need to get our 4.9 version out before trying to add new things at this point though. :)

How to make a activity not be commentable
    Hello,

I have a facing a design problem that I would like to share with the community.

By default all activities in the feed can be liked, commented and shared, but some activities doesnt make sense to be commented by example.

Just to ilustrate lets take the create topic and reply topic as a example. When someone create or reply a topic in forum a activity is created with "someone create a new topic". Considering that the objetive of a topic is to structure the discussion in the forum doesnt make sense people be allowed to comment in this type of content.

I noticed that there is a column in the database called "comment" but when i change this value to anything different from the default the Social Engine hide not only the comment button, but also the like button.

There is any way to hide only the comment button in these situations?
      • 1
Donna Made some progress. Now, if someone comments on a forum item in the feed, it shows a default error but that's not ideal as it could confuse them.
      • 1
Donna I'll have to test further as the default settings for Activity Feed Item Type Settings are for the forum creation not to post to the main feed. Unless you mean on the profile feed too.

PHP SE has been proved to be pretty much a bughell, would it be wise to go Cloud...
    Hello all,
I have been a PHP SE owner for many years now (since 2013) and the most basic functions have not yet been fixed and improved. See I am not a PHP savvy, if I was I would build my own engine, SE should be something for people who only have semi knowledge in such coding. But SE PHP has failed me numerous time, support and bug response is pretty much useless.
I have been considering to use Cloud instead. A way different concept ( I don't know why ) but less work, less headache. Since SE team never lived up to their promise to make SE PHP and SE Cloud compatible to be able to import content gtom PHP to Cloud or vica versa - although ironically they made that happen with Ning - I know that my 7000 members will be pretty much a loss I will have to somehow have them sign up to the new website, but I do want to know if it would be worth having Cloud SE over PHP or I should just move and use an entirely different engine.
    Thank you!

      Donna Hi [101979,AA] ,

Thanks for your feedback. Would you please let us know which bugs in our issue tracker you are speaking of? Here's a link to our Github issue tracker, https://github.com/socialengine/phpv4-issues/issues . If we know which bugs you are referring to, we can check the issues. If you've not submitted them, please submit one issue per report so that our team can look into fixing them.

Regarding support, would you kindly send your complaint to the attention of Kyle so he can check on any issues you had with support? We do try very hard to ensure that clients are satisfied.

Regarding the importer to and from SEPHP/SECloud - that is something on the list but we need to get our 4.9 version out first, which is coming in beta very soon. You might like the improvements in that version.

Regarding moving. I have my own websites on another script. I hadn't upgraded those to that scripts v4 version as it's so bad, I won't make my members experience that sort of mess. As such, I looked at just about every sn out there. I've decided to migrate to SE as it's the only one I've found that will work for my sites, has the security I want, and doesn't have the issues I've seen on the other scripts I researched. Note that I don't frivolously move my sites around either (which is why I've not upgraded it though that script's v4 version has been out for a few years now).

I hope this helps you decide what to do. If it were me in your shoes, I would wait and see what 4.9 comes with. There are a good amount of fixes in it from what I've seen in the fixed issues list.

      Thanks again for posting!

Any Store Plugin with Watermark for Digital Products?
    Hello,

I am looking for a store plugin to create a are and sell PDFs however both plugins that are avaliables in the marketplace (one from SEAO e another from Hire-Experts) doesnt have a  feature to "watermark" this type of files.

The watermark is important to help me to block users that are distributing pirated products. I know that this is not a simple fight, but I need to offer at least this feature to other publisher be interested in to sell products.

Someone know another store plugin that has this type of feature?

    Thanks,
      • 1
Donna I should have searched the marketplace first. I see there is one that has this feature already, https://www.socialengine.com/marketplace/app/advanced-photos-albums-plugin .
      • 1
Donna This would be a great feature for one of them to include. Were they not interested in adding it to their product? I think it would help them sell.

    What's Your Plan?
I've been planning to change my sites to the SocialEngine framework (both are currently using another script). As I've been planning, I thought I would start a discussion about your website plans.

Do you have some plans for your site this year? Perhaps a new theme or blog series. Perhaps adding some features or customizations.

Does social media play a part in your plans? If so, which ones? I've seen a trend away from Twitter as many grumble that it's become just one big advertisement.

Do you have plans to get your members more involved with your site? (We do have a blog coming up about this topic)

    My own plans involve:

Moving third party content (articles) into Blogs for the import.
    Moving Group blogs into discussions.
Alerting my members of the impending move (done on one site already).
Making plugins to replace the other plugins I made for the other script (these will be in the marketplace).
Announcing on FB/Twitter/Google after the moves and sending newsletters.
Making YT videos for how to use the new site.
More blog posts for each site to engage members.

I've more plans but you get the idea. :)

Feel free to provide your feedback!

      • 2
      Sieg My plans list ;)

      1- Find a way to have a better comment system for my commnunity: Actually is impossible to have a good discussion when you dont know where people is commenting;
2- Find a gamification plugin like a points/credits system: The unique developer avaliable (I am not considering Younetco) is not answering questions about their plugin (Points from Hire Experts).
      3- Find a good auto newsletter plugin: Again a useful plugin that I would like an alternative, but Hire Experts is not answering questions about their products;
      4- Write more tutorials and record videos to explain how the site works;
      5- Produce more content and improve my social network accounts;
      6- Maybe a mobile app
7- While the mobile app doesnt come, work on a better responsive layout
