Migrating PHP content to Cloud
So I noticed this have been a long time request from members and a very long time of promise by the SE team (2012) to be done. http://community.onsocialengine.com/post/1407/import-members-from-se4
Please make it happen already. Nothing takes 4 years!

Rick Von Ruden Well, I guess I will give you a history lesson of SE. Back at the beginning of cloud it was known as SE5 and was going to completely replace the php script. They planned on adding the same features that the php script had over time. The current SE customers and developers rebelled against this idea. In order to replace the php script they needed to be able to migrate customers to the new platform but since they kept both, they never wrote the script.

So SE ended up with a weak social cloud platform and a php script that needed serious upgrading basically a complete re-write. So they sold it to the new owners instead to cut their losses. Both platforms, cloud and php require serious work to stay feasible in the future, and I have yet to see the new owners commit to this. That's why I no longer use either SE cloud or php. I wish you luck.

Donna Hi [1134,Rick Von Ruden] ,

Thank you for your feedback. I am not sure if you've seen the recent blog posts but we are committed to change. We have the new site relaunch, http://blog.socialengine.com/2016/11/21/our-relaunch-has-happened/ that will help with apps as we included a certified marketplace that will be improved and added to over time; we also hired me (formerly data66 from phpFox), http://blog.socialengine.com/2016/10/25/welcome-donna/ to help with documentation (http://blog.socialengine.com/2016/12/09/documentation-updates-and-progress/ ), client success and many other things; we hired Raymond Benc, founder of phpFox who resigned from there, http://blog.socialengine.com/2016/11/16/welcome-raymond-to-our-team/ , and he is already working in the code and will bring many improvements to the SEPHP; we also have plans for SE Cloud improvements.

Rick Von Ruden Nothing against Raymond because he did great things with phpfox, but he is old school. Need to bring in new school code writers. He would be a great program manager with the vision and leadership to manage the new school coders to achieve SE goals.

Rick Von Ruden [231316,Donna] - Thanks for your response. I am watching the blogs. I own 2 SE licenses so I may use it again someday. The issue faced by all companies writing scripts these days is how fast technology and software changes. I wish your company success. Just remember that everything is mobile now so all the core should be focused on supporting mobile devices first and desktops second. Even with Cloud which is mobile friendly you lose capability such as notifications, private messaging, and search when on a mobile device. Honestly, I don't want to have to log on to a desktop to access these critical features.

Eugene You need to ask for API that will allow to write data. If there will be an API call to register a user - there will be 3rd party plugins/apps for the migration in no time.

NB. Does SE Cloud fit you needs better than SE php?

AA Yes I tried the demo and cloud would do better for the purpose. It's more simple, less buggy, less headache. PHP is a bughell still and it takes way too much time to maintain it and fix things all the time. Cloud would make it all simpler. Buying php instead of just firing up a cloud back then was a mistake. PHP to Cloud migration option was a promise they made long time ago and still nothing. :(

Eugene Thanks for the explanation. That's the problem of default SE PHP - you get more features, so more things can go wrong. But if plugins count is minimal - it performs similarly to SE Cloud. However the main benefit is that you have 100% control over the features, server and data.

        Donna Hi [101979,AA] ,

Thank you for your feedback. We will be improving our SEPHP version as I posted above, please check the various links I posted. :)

We also have plans for SE Cloud improvements in the pipeline but I don't have details yet. I'll check into the migration question when I get to work today.

AA Thank you for that. Would you please update me here if you have something? I would make preparations and I'd be happy to pay for the migration process itself too if it can be done.

Donna Hi [101979,AA] , Sorry for the late reply. I totally lost track of this. I don't have any details yet but have put the request in to our team that clients are asking for this.
