PoeticJustice I may do not different when I start out.

Before I start, branding is literally key to me as I have helped brand clothing labels etc in the past.

So the name and logo has to be on point. And if I can't obtain ALL the social media handles or .com

Then I'll scrap the name completely.
Keeping name below 15 characters is something I aim for to secure a twitter handle.

Also when building a social network to me I want to build a brand, not a social network.

I don't want to be referred to as "that social network for cat lovers" "that social network for cake maker" "that social network for type writer collectors"

I want to be a name.
So I try to market the social network as an addition to a service.

And when deciding on features, I work from a white board.... and I roll the features out on stages.

I would be silly to buy 20 plugins because they sound cool then upload to site, and be like enjoy all these features.... that would be mad of me to do.

So would plan to release features in stages, so the community is like "dammmm these guys mean it, constantly working and giving us new features" "omg all these new features what could be next" hashtag excited hashtag bossstatus

Work out your target audience and just hit them, use all big social networks for hashtags and Engadge with the people you want on your site.

Insterestingly I read the other day

      AirBnB = No Real Estate
      Uber = Has No Cars
      Facebook = Creates no content
      Amazon = Has no stores
Bitcoin = no currency and no physical coins

gs Great post and comments by Sieg, Mikel and Donna.

Yes, I learned this lesson decades ago (but still have to hammer it into my head) when demoing software for clients (which is what converted me from sales into consulting - finding out what's needed first).

Different content for different niches. Sometimes the answer hurts ('you mean all this time and money I spent isn't what you want??? - oh you're right - I never asked you what you wanted in the first place did I'). But sometimes in an effort to 'cover the bases' we simply add too much that no one (or too few Users) uses (at least not in the way we think).

Always good to regroup and think/plan our sites better as to what we're trying to accomplish. Are we trying to show what's possible with software or are we trying to honour our Users' interests and grow our community by focusing on something we (and they) are genuinely interested in (and if so, what tools/apps/processes best address these needs).

This is why I appreciate many of Kyles posts here at SE too - they often bring me back on point when I stray off the beaten path.

      Thanks for posting :)

      Mikel Coreclark Hello.
      Mikel here. owner of www.majuuna.com
Please if I may ad something to this discussion. Just 2 real points:
Like you I did some research of my own a long time ago. I checked facebook and mentally took it apart to see how it works.
1: Absolutely right, keep your network simple. don't overload it with apps / modules.
2: Yes facebook is huge with a few members :o) but what I found was that although facebook is simple yet its strength is not the subject matter. The only thing keeping facebook alive is the members. I know that many people leave facebook all the time but many times visit (just like myself) time and again. The reason is although I have left facebook all my friends are still addicted to and use facebook because their friends are on facebook.
So the hardest job for any new social network is to convince people that you have a community worth joining by attracting members as individuals. What I have just realised is I have to attract groups of people. Groups of friends or people with common interests. The best way to achieve this is to create mini groups, blogs, events, movies reviews, forums and other groups on your network such as photography, sports, cooking, auto. I am soon going to be launching a fresh marketing campaign to attract new members.
My target to start with will be the obvious, food, drink, cinemas, activities. Targeting these social locations could be a great start.
I am not going to create flyers, I'm going to get printed napkins, serviettes, as most places serve food and drink it could be a way in as these are placed on tables or on bars and everyone uses them.

      Well enough said.
      Mikel.

Not sure what you are trying to add to headers so it's harder for me to test.

Real social networks and where we going wrong
I was thinking in to create this post some months ago, but every time that I start to write it something happens and I need to stop. Lets see if I can complete this mission today :)

In first place what I will explain below may not be appliable to your social network, each niche has its own rules, so if you think that there is something interesting about your public please share in the comments.

I am managing a community for 3 years and I learned much with my users and in a discussion I started to talk about what we may improve and the main answer was be more Facebook or Twitter. In the same moment I said "What?!?".

This was not the first time that users asked me to make the website more like Facebook or Twitter, but was the first where my members started to agree among them that the website should be more like Facebook or Twitter. I asked them to be more specific, but no one was able to give a good answer. Here i decided to analyse what make others social network be popular even when people are not using them.

I started to analyse different social networks and I found some interesting points. I will not share everyone here because if I do this topic may become huge, but the main point is the simplicity.

Did you noticed that Facebook, Twitter or any other bigger networks doesnt have a section to album, video or music except if this type of content is the central element of the community? Did noticed that most social networks has a really simple layouts with few navigation options?

Social network softwares (like SE) are made to be useful to most different website users, but I learned that this doesnt mean that we need to "display" all features. My users really share images, but there is no necessity of the album section, my users also share videos, but rarely need to go to the video section. So here is the point, sometimes the high number of sections and features give confuses users rather than showing that the site has many options.

So think that is really essencial for your network, sometimes just hide a section that is not used will give to your network a new fresh air that is was needing.

ERR_BLOCKED_BY_XSS_AUDITOR - Someone Already Found This Error?
Today I started to receive a special error in chrome when "posting" in pages that use TinyMCE and here is a explanation about:

    http://www.ryadel.com/en/err_blocked_by_xss_auditor-error-google-chome-fix/

Seems that Chrome started to block some pages that it consider insecure even that there are no "strange" code as it say in the error description. I already checked and there is no security hole, so I would like to ask if someone is facing this issue also?

    GIF Player Support
I opened a ticket for this improvement in the core, but is possible that 3rd party developers would need to improve their wall/activities feed plugin. Here is the ticket:

    https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/714

Now that SE support GIFs there is a problem of with timelines with several GIFs running at same time. This make the feed being a few messy and to solve this some Social Network started to use GIF Players. A GIF player is a button that only make the GIF run after being clicked. There are some libraries with a few work, only being necessary to create a class to identify that the image is a GIF. Here is a library example:

    http://rubentd.com/gifplayer/
      • 1
SocialEngineAddOns Using our GIF Player Plugin, GIF file can be played on demand (onclick or mouseover) and duration can also be set for which GIF image should play. We have used mootools library in our 'GIF Player Plugin'.
For more info, visit the plugin description page here: https://www.socialengineaddons.com/socialengine-gif-player-plugin
Working of this plugin can be checked here: http://demo.socialengineaddons.com/

    Website Name After Page Description?
I can be wrong, but I remember that until version 4.8.13 website name was before the page title, but now seems that the opposite is happening.

In other words instead of sitename - page name description the website is displayed as page name description - sitename. Is this correct?

    Iframely Options
    Hello,

I am testing the version 4.9 and I confess that in despite of price to use the iframely api, I could understand the difference between the Social Engine Api and Host a Api. The Social Engine Hosted Api use Iframely or it use the old version from SE?
      • 1
Donna The SocialEngine Hosted version is the Iframely hosted by SE for licensed clients. :) We did this for clients that might not want to use the paid Iframely or on their own servers. Hope you enjoy it! :)

    Ads Issue solved in 4.9?
    Hello,

I reported a issue some months ago related with the ads plugin that I think that was included in 4.9, but I cant confirm now.

When you create a ads campaign and add different ads inside the system try to display all ads equally, so the total number is the same.

However if you has a ads with a high number of views and add a new, this new ads will be displayed until it has the same number that the older, what is pretty weird.

I remember to have reported this issue before in github, but can find now. Anyone know if this issue continue in 4.9?
      • 1
      PoeticJustice Ohhhh this is interesting
      • 1
Donna I can't find the bug report. If you created one, it should be in your profile at Github. I've not tried this yet to test (the ad issue you mention). Having a link to that bug report would be great if you can find it. :)

    4.9 Issue List
I made my first test and I already find my first problem. I will update this topic with the issues that I found.

1- Cant Install Activity Module: From all modules only the activity seems to have a problem. When I try to install it I receive a mysql error saying about a duplicated modified_date column and also a editable column

      • 1
Donna Our team can check this on your site if you would please submit a ticket. We need to see if it's a bug or site issue. If you don't have support, please send an email to support@socialengine.com with site details for our team. Thank you!

Donna Thanks for posting. However, this one is posted https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/659 . My own clone site worked fine but I've no third party plugins except the ones I made. Can you also check my questions in that tracker, especially regarding plugins?

How to serve Login Pages with HTTPS?
Chrome and Mozilla started a few ago a new procedure that mark some pages that has information like credit card number or password as insecure.

    https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2017/01/chrome-56-ssl-https-wordpress/

This will make in essence any pop-up login form useless when loaded in a non-secure https page and considering that is impossible in a Social Network force every external source to load using HTTPs this represent a big new challenge.

Some of my pages started to display a insecure tag this week and my users started to ask why this is happening. I remember that phpfox has a feature that allow certain pages with senstive data like admincp, the login page and profile management to be loaded using https, so I would like to ask how can we implement something similar to Social Engine?

I am trying to solve this using a rewrite rule, but was unable to solve until know.
      • 2
Donna My host just changed my author site to https and it works fine. The only thing I've not done is the redirect for those that might come from the http. http://support.socialengine.com/php/customer/en/portal/articles/2036045-how-to-protect-your-site-using-ssl-and-https?b_id=14386 please see if that tutorial helps.
      • 1
Donna I'll have to update that tutorial. For enabling this, which I just did for my site, instead of /application folder, change the .htaccess in the main folder wherever you have SocialEngine installed such as public_html if you don't have it in a subfolder.

    Cache and Maintenance Mode Error
    Hello,

I am facing a weird issue that started in the last week. I am unable to set my website in development mode using the "normal" process of click in the button in the admincp. When I click nothing happens like if the button is now working, but what is more strange is that the cache setting is displaying information from all cache option take a looking in the following screenshot:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1Vh7_gHrCMHT1Z1Qm0teVBGTjg/view?usp=drivesdk

The normal is that the option of memcache, by example, only appear if the radio button is clicked but it displaying with even when file is enable. Someone already had this issue? I already deactivated all plugin and this issue still happening.

    Thanks
      • 1
Donna Are you able to manually set it to development mode? I see the flush cache setting is not showing for you. Did you have it set to memcache before? Did you try manually clearing cache?

    How to Clean Private Messages?
    Hello,

There is some way to delete private messages without use the database?

The cometchat did a huge mess in my website due the enconding charset and now there is several "junk" messages in the private messages from SE.
      • 1
Donna This would be a great feature request. This should be able to be added to the task scheduler on a set schedule but it could cause users to lose messages they wanted to save.

Big and Professional Websites that use Social Engine
    Hello,

I was browsing the new marketplace and noticed that there are some showcases in some third party developers profiles.

As I am curious I visited some of these websites and most seems not to be much active or have a professional look, what is a bit ironic because if you are displaying a website in your portfolio is because you believe that is a impressive work.

So I would like to ask if anyone knows a really big website that use Social Engine? I am really curious to see what a well stablished Social Engine website can do.

Note: To my surprise my site is in the portfolio of one of the developers :D
      • 2
PoeticJustice I use my social engine completely different to how others use it.
Users log on daily, loads concurrent users.

Its all about staggering functions such as plugins, you need to drip feed to keep members interested.

Then focus and advertise about being a social network once you have over 250 members.

I have quiet alot of members, but the site is not really open to anyone.

But i would not personally showcase, nor do i expect big sites using SE to showcase.
      • 1
Donna I've got some in a list but need to verify if we can post them.I'll see tomorrow.
      • 1
Donna https://www.socialengine.com/ There are some sites there and some corporations listed that use SE. Some such as Apple, Nasa, etc are very recognizable.

How to make a activity not be commentable
    Hello,

I have a facing a design problem that I would like to share with the community.

By default all activities in the feed can be liked, commented and shared, but some activities doesnt make sense to be commented by example.

Just to ilustrate lets take the create topic and reply topic as a example. When someone create or reply a topic in forum a activity is created with "someone create a new topic". Considering that the objetive of a topic is to structure the discussion in the forum doesnt make sense people be allowed to comment in this type of content.

I noticed that there is a column in the database called "comment" but when i change this value to anything different from the default the Social Engine hide not only the comment button, but also the like button.

There is any way to hide only the comment button in these situations?
      • 1
Donna Made some progress. Now, if someone comments on a forum item in the feed, it shows a default error but that's not ideal as it could confuse them.
      • 1
Donna I'll have to test further as the default settings for Activity Feed Item Type Settings are for the forum creation not to post to the main feed. Unless you mean on the profile feed too.

Any Store Plugin with Watermark for Digital Products?
    Hello,

I am looking for a store plugin to create a are and sell PDFs however both plugins that are avaliables in the marketplace (one from SEAO e another from Hire-Experts) doesnt have a  feature to "watermark" this type of files.

The watermark is important to help me to block users that are distributing pirated products. I know that this is not a simple fight, but I need to offer at least this feature to other publisher be interested in to sell products.

Someone know another store plugin that has this type of feature?

    Thanks,
      • 1
Donna I should have searched the marketplace first. I see there is one that has this feature already, https://www.socialengine.com/marketplace/app/advanced-photos-albums-plugin .
      • 1
Donna This would be a great feature for one of them to include. Were they not interested in adding it to their product? I think it would help them sell.

    Where Profile Privacy is Stored?
    Hello,

I need to mass update the profile privacy from my users however I couldnt identify where this information is stored.

The information in question is avaliable in the admincp in this area: admin/authorization/level/edit/id/x

There are two options one related with privacy view (who can see the profile) and other about who can comment the profile. I need to make a update to change this setting to all existing profiles however I couldnt figure out what table store this information.

    Thanks
      • 1
      Donna Hi Leandro,

Check the table engine4_authorization_permissions for Type = user and Name = auth_view and auth_comment for the member level ID that you want to change.
